Joe Cirulli was born in New York to a large family (7 children). He attended community college in the 70’s and went to Gainesville because his girlfriend was studying there at the time. He began working at a local health club and sold memberships. He wasn’t making a lot of money and decided he would open his own gym at the age of 21. The first Gainesville Health and Fitness Center opened in 1978, and a second one would open in 1984. He had a lot of challenges from competitors along the way but managed to thrive. Gainesville Health and Fitness Centers generated $14.7 million in 2011 revenue, putting the company at No. 54 on Club Industry’s Top 100 clubs list this year.
